2023 year in review: growing up

Baserow year in review 2023 blog post banner

The year we grew

2023 has been the year we evolved from an open-source project to an open-source company, with business use cases in many industries like banking, healthcare, research, technology, manufacturing, real estate, education, and the public sector.

Our developers shipped a record amount of new features, which helped us earn new awards and recognition.

We want to thank you for your ongoing engagement with Baserow. Your feedback, engagement, support, and suggestions on how to improve Baserow, have been crucial to our success so far.

2024 will be a pivotal year for Baserow. We are on a mission to build the open platform for creating scalable databases and applications without code. Our product will become an end-to-end no-code platform with Application Builder, Database, and Automation modules. We remain focused on open source, cloud, and self-hosted deployment options, scalability, security, and data ownership for our users.

2023 in numbers:

In 2023, our users created 18,400+ workspaces. These workspaces have been instrumental in organizing unstructured datasets into clean, manageable information by creating over 27,000 databases and 75,500 tables with 41,750,231 rows.

In 2023, we focused our main efforts on improving our main product to make it faster, simpler, and easier to use. Specifically, last year we built 132 new features to help users work more efficiently to drive company goals, productivity, and employee engagement at scale.

Proud moments from 2023

Let’s take a look at the best bits of 2023 at Baserow:

Our sign-ups grew by 165%

We now have over 43,400 users worldwide, with a 165% year-over-year increase. In Q4 2023, we saw an increase of 30% in daily sign-ups, showing an acceleration in adoption across the world.

We welcomed new team members

We expanded our team predominantly on the developers to accelerate product development. We’re still hiring, so check out our open vacancies.

Customers started buying Baserow Enterprise & Advanced plans

2023 was the first year after we launched our paid Advanced and Enterprise plans for users who need role-based access control (RBAC) and other security features like audit log and SSO. We have since welcomed paying customers ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies across the world. Given our specific focus on openness, self-hosting, scalability, and data ownership, we saw the most adoption in the manufacturing, technology, research, government, and banking sectors. Our users are mostly active in marketing, product, operations, HR, and IT.

We received our first awards

2023 was a year with several user awards and recognition, which are the ones we love the most.

We launched the Baserow Ambassadors program

Baserow Ambassadors are the most passionate Baserow enthusiasts who are now volunteering their time and expertise to lead local community chapters all over the world. Currently, there are 17 ambassadors across 10 countries, from the US to Brazil, to Taiwan.

We achieved GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC compliance

Baserow SaaS now complies with GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC privacy and security regulations. We have implemented policies and controls to help you manage security threats, safeguard your data, and meet your compliance obligations.

Baserow is now even faster

We optimized Baserow’s speed, and now it can effortlessly handle tables with millions of rows. In some cases, it’s up to 100x faster than before. We’ve also made overall performance improvements across the board, with an average improvement of 3x. And this is just the beginning!

A vibrant Baserow community

We have 4,480 community members across all our social media platforms. What’s even more encouraging is that the overall engagement of our community members has tripled.

Additionally, our project has gained popularity and is now ranked as the 8th most popular project on GitLab, with 1,712 stars earned.

What’s in store for Baserow in 2024?

New Application Builder and Automation modules

Baserow started as an open-source Airtable alternative. While the database will remain our core focus, we will launch 2 new modules to enable users to build no-code web applications directly from Baserow and include native automation. This establishes the path to becoming the open platform for creating scalable databases and applications without code.

New UI

We started redesigning the platform, top to bottom! Baserow has a fresh new look, with a much stronger focus on user interface and experience. Opensource should look as slick as any other commercial SaaS product.

Here’s a sneak peek of the final design:

New branding

We are further evolving our brand with a focus on a minimalist, clean, and intuitive interface. To achieve this, we revamped the Baserow identity. We already redesigned our logo, and stay tuned for the upcoming launch of our new website in Q1 2024!

Thank you once again for an incredible year! 🙌 We wish you all a great holiday season and look forward to seeing you in 2024!
