What is a Phone number field?

A Phone number field is a specialized field type designed to store contact phone numbers. Unlike a standard text field, it validates that the input contains only characters commonly used in phone numbers and automatically renders values as clickable tel: links.

Its main purpose is to help ensure that phone numbers are entered in a valid format while making them easy to use.

  • Input validation: The field accepts only characters commonly used in phone numbers, including digits (0-9), +, (, ), -, spaces, #, *, and N/X. Entries are limited to 100 characters.
  • Click-to-call: Phone numbers are rendered as clickable tel: links. Clicking or tapping a number opens your device’s default calling application or any app registered to handle phone links.

This field is useful for any table that stores customer contacts, leads, employees, suppliers, or other records containing phone numbers.

Add a Phone number field

To add a Phone number field to your table:

  1. In your table, click the plus sign + to add a new field.
  2. In the dropdown menu, select Phone number as the field type.
  3. Enter a name for your field (for example, Contact Phone).
  4. Click Create.

Using the Phone number field

Once you’ve added the field, you can begin entering phone numbers.

The field validates that only supported phone number characters are entered. It does not automatically format or standardize phone numbers, so values are displayed exactly as entered.

Each phone number is rendered as a clickable tel: link. Clicking or tapping the value opens your browser or operating system’s default calling application (such as FaceTime, Skype, or your phone app), or another application that supports tel: links.

What’s the difference between a Phone number field and a text field?

A Single line text field accepts any combination of characters. A Phone number field restricts input to characters commonly used in phone numbers and automatically renders the value as a clickable tel: link.

What format should I use to enter a number?

The field does not enforce a specific phone number format or automatically reformat your input. For maximum compatibility with calling applications, we recommend entering phone numbers in international format, including the country code (for example, +1 555 123 4567 or +44 20 7946 0958).

Does this field validate that the phone number is real?

No. The field validates only that the entered value contains supported phone number characters. It does not verify whether a phone number exists, is active, or can be reached.
